Chapter Thirteen
Intense Moment
I screamed at the top of my lungs, begging her to stop, knowing we were going to fall to our deaths, but the red-haired Fae didnât seem to hear me at all. She was attempting to knock us off that wobbly bridge. My hands were slowly slipping.
âStop itâwhat are you doing? We are going to die out here!â I shouted again and again, barely hanging onto the ropes. The Fae guards behind us were shouting but werenât stepping on the bridge at all. I tried to close my eyes and pretend this wasnât happening, that I was still with Darragh in the forest. Now I knew I shouldnât have listened to her. She was completely insane.
âJust trust me,â she shouted back. âThis is the only way out of here.â
Then the Unseelie Fae started shooting arrows at us, one missed my ear by a few inches, and I thought this was it. I glanced back, and in that same moment, my foot slipped. A split second later, I was hanging on the rope by only my hands, seeing nothing but a huge pit of darkness down below. I knew if I was going to fall, then that was itâno magic could save me from death.
Iâd never had any upper-body strength, so my hands couldnât hold the rope as I tried to pull myself back on the bridge. The Fae who was supposed to rescue me was struggling to remain on the bridge, too. Moments later, she was shouting something in a language I didnât understand, most likely towards the Fae who were far behind.
Arrows were still flying past me, and I was amazed I hadnât been grazed by even one. The Unseelie Fae werenât using their magic. A second later, my fingers slipped, and I was falling. In that moment, my entire life in Farrington began flashing before my eyes. This couldnât have been it. I didnât want to die, chased by Unseelie bastards.
Moments later I realised I was going to live, because I never hit the ground. Well, I sort of did, but it was not a life-threatening fall. I ended up bruising my elbow, and for a moment, I must have lost consciousness. When I came around, the redheaded Fae who saved me was slapping my cheek.
âCome on, wake up, wake up. We are fine, we tricked them.â She was saying and finally stopped hitting me when she saw I was coming around. I gazed up, completely disoriented, amazed I wasnât actually dead.
âWhat happened? Where are the Unseelie Fae?â
âNever mind them. We are in the Fae Kingâs cell, and he doesnât look too good. They must have used magic to make him talk.â
I finally managed to pick myself up off the ground. Every part of my body hurt, but more my hips than anything, which seemed odd. Thatâs how most human women described pain after a very intensive labour, but I didnât remember giving birth to a child. The room was dark, but her hands were gleaming with light.
